Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander

Levi Maurer
In 2013 I completed my Discipleship Training School in York, England. A DTS is not simply a missions trip, nor is it necessarily just a training program, although to some extent, it is both of those things. It is an entryway to YWAM, to being part of an international community of people, working together to reach the unreached, the broken, forgotten, and lost. One of the best things about a DTS is the family that is formed between the trainees and staff, those friendships will last through the years. The lecture phase of a DTS is both educational, and engaging, whatever your background may be, you are sure to have your beliefs challenged and your horizons expanded. On outreach, whether you go to a first, second, or third world country, you will meet many amazing people, see some unusual things, and be thrown out of your comfort zone. I learned and experienced many things on my DTS, whether it was relying on God for provision no matter how hopeless a situation may look, or keeping my mind and heart open to what God was trying to teach me, or doing something that I was completely uncomfortable with for the sake of reaching someone. My DTS had a massive impact on my life, in my decision to return to YWAM York as staff, and in everything that I have done since, it has changed my life and continues to do so today.
Lectures

The Discipleship Training School (DTS) emphasises cross-cultural exposure and global awareness, preparing students to answer the call to “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

YWAM York’s lecture phase incorporates a live/learn environment, therefore, every aspect of life in York is important in the learning process. Work duties, late night conversations or sharing a room with others and learning to live out love in all situations is what makes a DTS as much as the amazing content in lectures. We want you to have the opportunity to put into practice what you are learning in various situations. Each week of lectures you will be involved in working in the community.

These week long topics will focus on different aspects of Christian discipleship. We are proud to involve some incredible, inspiring teachers from around Europe, who will teach on various topics, such as:

• Hearing Gods Voice
• Character and Nature of God
• Holy Spirit
• Missions
• Relationships

We value the fact that everyone learns in a variety of ways. This is reflected in our schedule, which includes different opportunities for interaction, such as small group discussion, one-to-one mentoring, book studies, research and creative projects. The best environment for discipleship will always be within a community that seeks God. Discipleship begins with incorporating a regular rhythm of worship and prayer in a student’s day to day life in the YWAM community.

Placements
Local Placements

Learning isn’t simply sitting on your hands while listening to others speak. It’s about discovering for yourself, which happens by getting out there, meeting real people and being impacted by real experiences. The project that you get involved with may be a part of YWAM York’s project or a ministry that we support in York.

Over the 13 weeks of lecture phase, the DTS are placed in at least 1 local placement on a weekly basis except when the DTS are on a mini outreach. Currently, we are supporting ministries within York that are established and are providing fabulous opportunities for the DTS to work of the values and aims of the DTS.

You will also get the opportunity to listen to God’s heart for the community and the city, and respond with action. This might also be done by asking God what project he wants you, as part of a team, to initiate. You might very well be shocked by the results. These local placements allow you to put the lessons learned in your lectures into practice with the purpose of demonstrating the Kingdom of God.

City Placements

The cities placement phase of the DTS is 10 weeks long, with 2 weeks of debrief. During the lecture phase the DTS will have 1-2 placements in England. The longer European placement will vary every DTS and include at least one of the European locations. Each one of our focus cities is based on God leading us to these cities. We are commit to each city with the goal to see new teams developed, or supporting existing teams in each one of these cities. During the European placement the DTS will visit at least one of the cities, however, since we are following God’s lead’s there is the possibility that the DTS may visit other places within Europe.

These overseas placements are designed to challenge your worldview, and to offer you the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation in a different cultural setting. Placements are a time of evangelism, discipleship and blessing the long term work that will continue to be there after the overseas placement is finished. Everything from the year will be brought together to teach, befriend and generally love on people. The activities during this time vary location to location. YWAM York has focus cities where we want to continually invest in what God is doing there, these include:

English Placements: European Placements:
Manchester Italy, Rome
Birmingham Reykjavik, Iceland
Liverpool Prague, Czech Republic
Chisinau, Moldova
